Retinol is a form of vitamin A and has been known as an anti-aging ingredient for several years. It is used in cosmetic products to reduce wrinkles, refine skin pores, and help combat acne. It also plays a role in building skin structure, promoting the formation of new skin cells and supporting the regeneration process. It acts as an antioxidant against free radicals from the environment that negatively affect the skin's aging process. Retinol can cause redness, irritation, and inflammation of the skin if used in the wrong concentration or in excessive doses.
THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF RETINOL
- Retinol esters (retinyl palmitate, retinyl linoleate) – This is a weak form of retinol and therefore gentler on the skin.
- Retinol (retinol) – Pure retinol is only used in concentrations of up to 1% in the EU. The lower the concentration, the less irritating it is.
- Tretinoin – Also known as vitamin A acid, it is present in small amounts in the human body. When used on the skin, it is extremely irritating, which is why it is not used in cosmetic products. Prescription acne products and medications may contain tretinoin.
Retinol products used as cosmetics should only be used in slowly increasing concentrations so that the skin can get used to the active ingredient and possible irritation can be avoided.
Important: Not everything labeled as retinol actually contains retinol. Therefore, always check the INCI (ingredient information that all products must display). Retinyl palmitate, retinyl linoleate, or retinol are the key ingredients that must be included.
Retinol can do that
Retinol, also known as vitamin A1 or axerophthol, was discovered in 1913 by scientists Elmer McCollum and Marguerite Davis and is considered a highly effective anti-aging agent. Retinol stimulates the skin's natural collagen production. The use of this active ingredient can also accelerate skin cell renewal. Retinol visibly reduces dark spots, enlarged pores, and even small wrinkles. In addition, retinol is considered an excellent moisturizer, ensuring that the skin looks more radiant and younger. It is therefore highly effective in anti-aging creams.
